Learn More about Tegallalang

Nestled in the Indonesian province of Bali, in the middle of the hills north of Ubud, the village of Tegallalang is famous for its rice terraces.

This area is one of the most photographed in Bali. Breathe in the fresh air, watch the mist slowly settle over the mountains or simply relax in the shade of the coconut trees and enjoy the rural atmosphere.

Dating back over 2,000 years, the rice terraces were carved into the mountainside by local farmers using primitive tools.
These incredible structures, which resemble gigantic steps, are supported by retaining walls and form a system designed to harness the water that flows down the slopes.

Rice is a very important crop in Bali. It is part of the staple diet of the people and plays a central role in religious ceremonies.
Planting and harvest management are organised by a central authority within each village. They are also closely linked to religious and seasonal calendars.

Tegallalang is a popular tourist destination and can be very crowded at times. Go to the opposite side of the hill for a great view in a quieter atmosphere.
The café at the top of the hill also offers a magnificent view.

Don't forget your boots if you plan to hike, as the ground can be wet and muddy.
The village of Tegallalang is also famous for its hand-carved wooden art and souvenirs. There are many vendors selling their wares along the road and in the surrounding villages.

Not far away is Pakudui, a small village in the Tegallalang craft area. It is a testament to the local talent for ornamental woodwork and carving. Indeed, the villagers are very good craftsmen specialising in wood carving, an art passed down from generation to generation in the region.
