Activity description

Join this day-long safari, chartering the sea on the lookout for Norway's whales and puffin colonies from Stø in the Vesterålen archipelago. Welcoming adventurers from ages 2 and up on this family-friendly excursion!

This tour begins at Stø, a village located in the Vesterålen archipelago in Northern Norway. Vesterålen is situated to the north of the Lofoten Islands and is known for its picturesque landscapes, fishing communities, and outdoor activities. The Lofoten islands are located above the Arctic Circle and offer a mix of mountains, fjords, and coastal scenery.

This safari begins at the meeting point at Stø in Vesterålen. The crew will welcome you on board the ship, which holds a maximum capacity of 65 passengers. You will get comfortable inside the cosy ship or out on the deck. The captain will then set sail into the vast Norwegian Sea. On this excursion, you will head to the canyon of Bleik in search of sperm whales - the highlight of the safari! On the way, you may encounter a number of other cetaceans, including pilot whales, minke whales, orcas, humpbacks, harbour porpoises and Atlantic white-sided dolphins.

As the marine mammals wander to different areas every day and migrate at different times, each safari will spot different animals, making each trip an exciting new venture into the waters. The informed crew will give you plenty of information about the wildlife of the Norwegian coast as you navigate through the beautiful landscape. On the way, a light hot fish or vegetarian soup will be served aboard the boat, made from locally cultivated ingredients. Hot drinks (tea, coffee or hot chocolate) and biscuits will also be distributed to keep you warm and replenished.

On the way back to Stø, the boat will make a stop in front of the island of Anda, which is home to thousands of seabirds. Most notable of these are the puffin colonies - get your binoculars out to observe 3000 of these North-Atlantic seabirds in their natural habitat, nesting in the cliffs. Other birds you may spot include white-tailed eagles, cormorants, kittiwakes, razorbills, and many more. Beneath them, you might spot some of the resident seals on the rocks as well.

This is an educational and fascinating all-day excursion around the Vesterålen archipelago from Stø, where you will discover and learn about the exciting wildlife of Norway!
