What's on at Leipzig Zoo?

Anyone who passes through the the entrance of Founders Garden can feel the historic atmosphere from the zoo's early years. Discover the signature of Ernst Pinkert, who laid the foundation stone for the Zoological Garden in 1878, among other historic structures throughout the park.

Surrounded by chattering, snoring and trumpeting, visitors can immerse themselves in the landscapes of Asia. Anoas and Przewalski’s horses roam the area, tigers prowl through the taiga, while birds fly over the mountain tops of the Himalyas.

Gondwanaland allows you to experience the tropical rainforests of Africa, Asia and South America with all of your senses. This covered area is home to almost 170 rare animal species and over 500 different plant species. Winding jungle paths, a treetop trail, and a mystical jungle river enable you to discover impressive tropical diversity.

Pongoland is a one-of-a-kind ape enclosure brimming with chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans. The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig also conducts research here, and invite you to join in their efforts with interactive displays throughout the park.

Jet set to Africa without ever leaving the ground! In a spacious landscape setting, zebras, giraffes, ostriches and other species harmoniously cohabitate in the exhibit as if they were living together in the wild. From various viewpoints you can enjoy breath-taking views of these Savannah species.

Big cats, spotted hyenas, lions and meerkats make frequent appearances throughout the day (and night!).

Set off on your expedition from the restaurant Hacienda Las Casas (an Art Nouveau building restored in its original style) through the wild and rugged wilderness of South America. Here you can experience the landscapes of the Pantanal, the Pampas, and Patagonia, as well as the flamingo lagoon with many fascinating and colorful species.

Tips for visiting Leipzig Zoo

Most people spend around 3.5 to 4 hours in the zoo on average. You can flash your Leipzig Zoo tickets at any time and have a great experience, but if you're looking to make the most of every attraction inside, try getting to Leipzig Zoo in the morning, right after it opens.

It's not just the animals who are well-fed at Leipzig Zoo. There's lots to eat for humans too. Whether it's an indulgent breakfast at Hacienda Las Casas, snacks at the jungle village, or a fresh buffet in the Kiwara Lodge, there's something to suit everybody’s taste.

Before you get on a boat in Gondwanaland and time travel through the earth’s history, grab a few refreshments at the Bamboo Bar, or sample delicious fare from the Far East at Restaurant Patakan. This spot also has awesome views of lush tropical surroundings.

Your Leipzig Zoo tickets buy you a whole lot of animal-focused fun, and there's so much to see. Every single attraction will be someone else's highlight.

In Gondwanaland, explore a real rainforest, where you can touch and smell pineapples, yams, guavas, pepper or cocoa. The high-mountain landscape of the Himalayas is the place to spot snow leopards, Michie’s tufted deer and red pandas. And in Pongoland, meet your new primate friends – chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans.

Because the paths around this tropical-themed world are pretty narrow, Leipzig Zoo recommends that you leave your prams, strollers and carts outside Gondwanaland, under the awning in the designated area. If your children cannot yet walk, bring your own baby carrier or baby sling.

Dogs are not allowed into Leipzig Zoo. You can bring your own snacks inside, and some of the animals have food dispensers you can use to give them a snack too (don't feed them human food). But why not travel light and make the most of your Leipzig Zoo tickets by visiting the snack shacks and restaurants inside?
