⛰️ Highland ⛰️ MountainParo is a city on the banks of Paro Chhu River in Bhutan, South Asia. It is also the seat of Paro District in the northwest. If you are visiting Bhutan, Paro is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the country. You will discover many historical sites, traditional houses, and very hospitable people.
Despite its charm and its many tourist assets, Paro is especially known in the world for its atypical airport. Indeed, Paro is the only city in Bhutan that has an airport, but its location in the mountains does not facilitate the landing of planes.
The Paro valley is also famous for its great serenity. The city is also home to the country's famous national museum and the famous Dobji dzong, the oldest in Bhutan, built in 1531.
The main street of the city was built in 1985. It is lined with brightly painted wooden houses and several local restaurants. Today, with the evolution of the city, some buildings are built at each corner. It is then necessary to hope that these new constructions do not come to spoil the charm of the places. The city seems frozen in time, with a rural atmosphere and its buildings decorated traditionally.
The Rinpung dzong is a strategic point in the Paro valley, as it is the religious center of the region. Above the fortress is the Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower that is now the national museum of Bhutan. The museum contains numerous pieces of ancient Bhutanese art, weapons, stamps, birds, and animals specific to the area.
Also, below the dzong is a medieval bridge where stands the Ugyenpelri Palace, the royal residence built by Penlop Tshering Penjor. A walk across the bridge with its inlaid stone path offers a beautiful view of the fort.
You can also visit the monasteries of the city, the Kyichu Lhakhang dating from the 7th century, the Dungtse Lhakhang, the Taktshang monastery or one of the many temples of the area to immerse yourself in the architecture and the local culture.
Paro is a charming city filled with ancient buildings of great historical interest, and its surroundings have lush vegetation ideal for walking, not to be missed during your stay in Bhutan.
The only airport in the country is in Paro, so it is easy to get there. The airport is 3.7 miles (6 km) from the city and 25 miles (40 km) from the capital. From the airport, you can reach the city by bus. To get around the city of Paro, you can do everything on foot, the city is not very big.
Paro has no shortage of hotels where you can stay. Tashi Namgay Resort is a good and popular hotel near the river, Olathang Hotel is located on the hills of the city and is very nice.
In order to go to Bhutan, you need to make some administrative steps. First, you must have a valid passport and apply for a visa.
Unlike most countries, whose embassies abroad are responsible for issuing visas and stamping your passport prior to travel, Bhutan issues visas on arrival at the airport in Paro or, if you are arriving by road, in Phuentsholing, Gelephu or Samdrup Jongkhar. You must apply in advance through a travel agency and wait for your application to be accepted before traveling to Bhutan. All tourist visa applications must be made through a Bhutanese travel agency and approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thimphu.
