How to visit Copenhagen ?

To get to Copenhagen, you can either fly into Copenhagen Airport (CPH), which is the largest airport in the Nordic countries, or take a train or bus from other European cities. From the airport, you can easily reach the city center using public transportation like the metro, train, or bus.

It's a good idea to book some attractions in advance to avoid long queues and guarantee entry. Tivoli Gardens, an iconic amusement park, is a must-visit, and booking tickets online can save you time. If you're an art enthusiast, pre-book your entry to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, which houses an impressive collection of contemporary works.

Copenhagen can be expensive, but there are ways to save on costs. The Copenhagen Card is a great investment, as it offers free access to over 80 attractions, free public transportation, and discounts on restaurants and sightseeing tours. Prices range from €60 for a 24-hour card to €120 for a 120-hour card.

Some of the best things to do in Copenhagen include exploring Nyhavn, the colorful 17th-century waterfront area; visiting the Little Mermaid statue; and strolling through the historic district of Christianshavn. For a taste of Danish history, visit Rosenborg Castle and the Amalienborg Palace, home to the Danish royal family.

Copenhagen offers a wide variety of dining options. For a traditional Danish meal, try Restaurant Schønnemann, which specializes in smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches). If you're in the mood for seafood, Kødbyens Fiskebar is a popular choice. For a more budget-friendly option, consider visiting Torvehallerne, a bustling market with numerous food stalls.

When it comes to accommodations, Copenhagen has plenty of options to suit different budgets. For a luxurious stay, consider Hotel D'Angleterre, a historic 5-star hotel located in the heart of the city. Alternatively, the mid-range Andersen Boutique Hotel offers stylish rooms and a convenient location near the central station. For budget travelers, the trendy Urban House Copenhagen by MEININGER is a great option with both private and shared rooms.

Off the Beaten Path:

For an unusual travel experience in Copenhagen, visit the unique neighborhood of Freetown Christiania. This self-governed community is known for its colorful murals, alternative lifestyle, and relaxed atmosphere. Wander through the car-free streets, visit the local art galleries, and enjoy a coffee at one of the cozy cafes. Another offbeat experience is to take a bike tour to the Copenhagen Harbour Baths, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the city's clean harbor waters. These urban swimming spots are popular with locals and a great way to experience Danish outdoor culture.

Learn More about Copenhagen

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is one of the most attractive cities in Scandinavia.

A weekend in Copenhagen is a unique combination of tradition and design. Located at the gateway to the Baltic Sea, the city is crisscrossed by picturesque canals lined with colorful houses, such as the Nyhavn, which was long the haunt of sailors and writers. In this world of water and greenery, avant-garde buildings find a natural place. Home of Arne Jacobsen, the pope of design, Copenhagen remains the European benchmark for the most cutting-edge aesthetic concepts. The Danish capital can be visited by bike, between museums, cafés and gourmet breaks. Don't forget to say hello to the Little Mermaid, near the cruise port.

Nestled among the wild beaches and coves of the Oresund province, Copenhagen faces Sweden.

Founded eight centuries ago, this city of sailors, merchants, academics, and artists is the most dynamic capital of Scandinavia. The best way to explore the city is by bicycle, as distances are not excessive. With its large parks and rich heritage, the city offers many cultural visits: the discovery of its lively pedestrian streets, the Tivoli amusement park, and the "free city" of Christiana, without cars or motorcycles.

For a stroll through the heart of the city, venture into the small winding streets of the old town,

A picnic on the shores of the beautiful lake in Christiania. Look for some elegantly designed objects to add a little Scandinavian flair to your home! Jazz is big in Copenhagen, so be sure to make time to go to one of the city's most famous jazz clubs, like La Fontaine, Copenhagen Jazz House, or Jazzhouse Montmartre.

In the summer, enjoy some of the best fresh salmon you've ever tasted at Vesterbro, the old meatpacking district.

One of the trendiest places to be seen, this is where you'll find the main gathering of bobos. If you want to kill two birds with one stone and Sweden has always attracted you but you've never had the opportunity to visit, then you're in luck because Copenhagen and Malmö in Sweden are connected by a bridge that can be crossed in about 30 minutes by car.

Frequently Asked Questions by Travelers planning a trip to Copenhagen

Copenhagen : what to eat?

  • Fresh herring and brown bread at the Admiral Hotel's Salt beach bar on the bank of the Nyhavn Canal - arguably the best herring in the city in one of the most beautiful waterfront locations

  • The typical Danish Smorrebrod, or "open sandwich", is also worth trying.

  • You can opt for anything from delicious tuna mayo with delicately sliced apples to chorizo and cheese.

  • You can try dancing outside at the Copenhagen Jazz House street parties before the concerts during the annual jazz festival in July.

  • Another must on the list to feel like a local is to jump into the canal in the Bryggae Islands in summer - beware though, it's still a bit chilly!

If you have some money to spend, however, book a table at Noma, a world-famous Michelin-starred restaurant - you should book several months in advance if you don't want to be disappointed.

Take some of that sleek Danish design back with you - home decor stores are not hard to find as Danes are big fans of home decor, but if in doubt, check out Illium on Stroget or Design Zoo on Vesterbrogade towards the Friedriksberg area. For last-minute gifts, there are an impressive number of quality stores at the airport; however, they are slightly more expensive than in the city.

There are many things to see in Copenhagen, but the "must-sees" are the Design Museum and the Carlsberg district, where you'll find classy contemporary art galleries as well as the Carlsberg Museum, which you'll round off with a beer tasting.

You should also visit the old meatpacking district for its trendy and creatively decorated bars in Vesterbro, the Buanderie café in Norrebro, which has the most stylish washing machines we've ever seen in the back so customers can grab a homemade smoothie and a slice of delicious carrot cake while waiting for their machine!

Be sure to stop by Tivoli Gardens and check it out. Designed in 1843, this amusement park retains a historic charm intrinsic to its nature - in no way does it resemble Disneyworld in atmosphere or style. Although the Nyhavn area is always crowded with tourists, it is at least worth a visit to see its cobblestone streets and colorful terraced houses. However, whichever route you choose, be sure to cycle it in the summer - easy and cheap to get around, the city is perfectly suited to cyclists.
