One of the most popular hill stations in India is Mussoorie. And though it is not an official summer capital like other hill stations, it was one of the summer resorts of the British during the colonial period, not only for its cool climate but also for its picturesque beauty that never fails to leave an impression on anyone who witnesses it. Located in the Garhwali Himalayas, Mussoorie is a hill station in the state of Uttarakhand. The town of Mussoorie lies at an average elevation of 1880 meters above sea level. It was intended to be the office of the Great Survey of India which was eventually established at Dehradun. Tourism remains one of the main sources of the town's economy and the town is full of bed and breakfasts, luxury hotels, cafes and bars. The hill station is famous for its blue, misty and snowy hills, bright and green valleys, distant views of the Ganga and Jamuna rivers, as well as the Doon Valley and the town of Dehradun that it overlooks. Mussoorie is often called Mansoorie by the locals after "Mansoor", a local shrub indigenous to this region. The town was also known as the first place where the 14th Dalai Lama arrived in India after the Tibetan rebellion of 1959. He established the central administration in Mussoorie before moving to Dharamsala in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The Tibetan school was also established in 1960, which led to the settlement of Tibetans in Happy Valley.
