Why Traveling There?

Bagolino is a charming medieval town nestled in the Brescia province of Lombardy, Italy. With its cobbled streets, old-world architecture, and stunning mountain views, it's a perfect destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Bagolino is also home to the unique traditional carnival, recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage.

How to Get There?

The nearest major airport to Bagolino is Verona Villafranca Airport, approximately 90 km away. From there, you can take a shuttle to Brescia and then a bus to Bagolino. If you prefer to drive, car rentals are available at the airport.

What to Book in Advance?

You should book your accommodations in advance, especially during the carnival season. If you plan to hire a car, booking in advance can also secure you better rates. For those interested in the history and culture of the town, you might want to book a guided tour.

What Are the Costs?

Bagolino, being a small town, offers cost-effective options for travelers. Meals in local restaurants cost around 15-20 Euros per person, while a room in a mid-range hotel can cost around 70-100 Euros per night. Keep in mind that prices may increase during the carnival season or summer holidays.

What Are the Best Things to Do?

Exploring the medieval architecture of Bagolino is a must. Visit the Parish Church of St. George, the ornate frescoes in the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, and the Bagolino Castle. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy hiking in the surrounding mountains and exploring the beautiful Lago d'Idro. And of course, if you're visiting in February, don't miss the vibrant Bagolino Carnival.

Where to Eat?

The "Trattoria Cadrega" is a local favorite offering traditional dishes from the Lombardy region. Another great option is "Osteria La Botte," known for its rustic charm and delicious homemade pasta.

Where to Stay?

For a comfortable stay within the town, consider "Albergo Al Tempo Perduto," a quaint hotel with excellent service. If you prefer staying closer to nature, "Camping al Sole" offers lodges and camping options near Lago d'Idro.

Off the Beaten Path

For an unusual experience, visit the local cheese factories and see how Bagòss, a unique, aged cheese exclusive to Bagolino, is made. You can also take a scenic drive to the nearby Val Sabbia, an unspoiled valley dotted with picturesque villages and beautiful landscapes. It's an excellent opportunity to experience the serene beauty of this less-touristy part of Italy.

Learn More about Bagolino

Bagolino is an Italian municipality in the province of Brescia in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Its inhabitants are called bagolinesi or bagossi.

The village is famous for its carnival, which takes place every year in February for three days before Mardi Gras. A mass is held on Monday morning in honour of the ballerini, masked dancers who walk the streets during these three days accompanied by a band.
The streets are also walked by the maschere, grotesque characters wearing fright masks and loud wooden clogs to frighten the crowd.
The distinctive characteristic of the ballerini is elegance, while that of the maschere is obscenity.

The ballerini's costume is made up of inexpressive white masks, all identical, covered with a small black mask painted over the eyes, making the wearer lose interest in his person and become the instrument of the rite.
The clothes must be of the best possible quality, sometimes adorned with epaulettes.
The hat, a major element of the costume, is made of a layer of red wool on which are hung numerous jewels, medals and golden chains.

The ritual requires the dancer not to show his hat to strangers before the carnival. The golden ornaments that make up the hat belong to the dancer's relatives and must be lent to them a few months before the carnival; the dancer will thank these people by dancing under their windows.

The orchestra, composed of violins, a guitar and a double bass, is at the orders of the capi who choose from the 25 sonatas that make up the carnival musical repertoire.

The ballerini are organised into three categories: the balarì dance, the capi coordinate the dancers and the sunadur play the music.

The maschér, by contrast, are totally disorganised. Both factions, balarì and maschér, share a strict rule of anonymity: they do not answer their names when someone calls them that.
