If you prefer to drive, Pisa is easily accessible via the A11 and A12 highways.

What to book in advance?

While you can visit most attractions in Pisa without booking in advance, it's a good idea to reserve tickets for the Leaning Tower climb. The number of visitors allowed to climb the tower is limited, and during peak season, tickets can sell out quickly. You can book your tickets online through the official website to secure your spot.

What are the costs?

Pisa is a relatively affordable Italian city. Entrance fees for attractions range from €5 to €20, with the Leaning Tower being the most expensive at €18. Dining in Pisa can vary, but expect to pay around €10-€15 for a pasta dish and €15-€20 for a main course at a mid-range restaurant. Budget accommodations can be found for as low as €30-€40 per night, while more luxurious options start at €80 per night.

What are the best things to do?

The Leaning Tower is a must-visit, but don't miss other attractions such as the Pisa Cathedral, Baptistery, and the Monumental Cemetery. Stroll along the Arno River and visit the picturesque Piazza dei Cavalieri. The Museo Nazionale di San Matteo houses an impressive collection of Italian art, while the Pisa Charterhouse offers a glimpse into a secluded Carthusian monastery.

Off the beaten path

For an unusual travel experience, rent a bike and explore the countryside around Pisa. Head to the nearby town of San Miniato, famous for its white truffles, and climb the Frederick II Tower for panoramic views of the Tuscan landscape. Visit Calci, home to the impressive Charterhouse of Pisa and the Natural History Museum, housed in an ancient monastery. These lesser-known gems will offer a unique and authentic experience away from the tourist crowds.

Learn More about Pisa

To visit Pisa is to visit one of the most important and famous places of the Renaissance. It is a city rich in art, history and culture, which gave birth to Galileo Galilei, Leonardo Fibonacci and Pisanello. Once a maritime nation on a par with Genoa and Venice, Pisa's fame stems from one architectural project that went horribly wrong. But the famous Leaning Tower is not the only asset of this fascinating city. Pisa is a student town, bustling day and night with locals rather than tourists. The city is a perfect blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture and culture. Children and adults alike have heard of the 'Tower of Pisa'. The tower is probably the number one reason to visit Pisa and it is undoubtedly the most famous tower in the world. The Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin of Pisa in Piazza dei Miracoli. It is said to lean at an angle of 3.59 degrees to the south; construction began in 1173 and took two centuries to complete; by the time the third floor was added in 1178, the tower had already begun to lean and work was suspended for 90 years. Until 1990, tourists had to climb 293 steps to reach the top of the tower. However, the angle of inclination had become dangerously high and it was calculated that the tower would collapse in 2000. So expensive works were carried out to prevent this, and the tower was reopened in 2001. And now, more than ten years after the completion of the consolidation work, the tower stands again without human intervention. Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin (Duomo) The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, typical of the Pisan style, is a five-aisled Romanesque basilica in white marble, designed by the architect Busquets. It is the centre of a group of buildings on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the entrance, don't miss the Porta di San Ranieri, a bronze door depicting the life of the Virgin and Christ. Inside, you can admire the pulpit by Giovanni Pisano.
