Learn More about Almaty

As the financial capital and main cultural and commercial centre of Kazakhstan, Almaty is certainly one of the most pleasant cities in Central Asia. You will enjoy its wealth of beautiful museums, fountains, historical and architectural ensembles as well as its cultural and festive life.

Almaty is also a paradise for outdoor recreation. The city lies at the foot of the Ala-Tau mountain range in the far south-east of Kazakhstan.
You can go hiking in the Ile-Alatau National Park, where beautiful lakes await you. Horseback riding is very popular in this reserve of forests, mammals and birds.

At the green market you can taste local specialities such as koumis, a drink made from fermented mare's milk, or plov, a kind of fried rice with meat and vegetables.
Don't forget to try the delicious wild apples for which Almaty (which literally means "city of apple trees") is famous.

Enjoy a fascinating ethnographic experience at the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan, which tells you a lot about Kazakh history and culture. It tells the story of the country from prehistoric times through the Mongolian period to the Soviet occupation.

In the XIIIᵉ and XIVᵉ centuries, Almaty was a key stop on the ancient Silk Road. You will find this special atmosphere in Zhibek-Zholy (Silk Road), a lively pedestrian street in the centre of Almaty that ends at the Silk Way Mall, where you can do some shopping in an upscale indoor environment.

Medeu, the former Olympic stadium turned into a giant ice rink in winter, becomes a huge complex underneath the rink in summer with a swimming pool fed by mountain water.
The surrounding hills offer great walking opportunities.

Green Hill, accessible by cable car, offers the best view of Almaty. The area is dotted with hiking trails and beautiful lawns that offer a variety of outdoor activities and attractions (summer sledges, climbing walls, Ferris wheel), including a market for tasty fresh goat cheese.

Take a sauna break at the Arasan bathhouse. This must-see place is a huge single-sex spa complex similar to a hammam. There are Russian and Finnish baths and various spa and massage packages, followed by a tea break.

Almaty will charm you, you just have to trust it.
