Learn More about Arrowtown

Arrowtown is a living, historical village with many stories to tell.. Stroll along tree-lined streets, see restored cottages and explore the site of a gold mine. One of the most picturesque settlements in New Zealand is Arrowtown, on the banks of the Arrow River, known for its gold. The town was founded in 1862, at the height of Otago's gold rush. The settlement grew rapidly as pioneers built cottages, businesses, hotels and churches (over 60 of which are still standing). Of special note is the Chinese settlement on the riverbank, an area created by Chinese miners since 1868, with restored buildings and shelters and portraits of a bygone era. The Lakes District Museum on Buckingham Street has been described as one of the best small museums in New Zealand, accurately depicting the early life of the Maori people in the South Lakes region in the mid to late 19th century, the difficult pioneering period and the gold rush with a variety of entertaining displays. The museum accurately portrays the early life of the Maori people in the South Lakes region in the mid to late 19th century, the difficult pioneering years and the gold rush, with a variety of entertaining displays. The golden age is long gone (although gold can still be extracted from the river) and Arrowtown is now more than ever keen to welcome visitors. You can play on the challenging local golf courses or visit Masetown (a ghost town accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicle). During April and May, Arrowtown is colourfully lit up as the deciduous trees prepare to welcome winter, and the last week of April sees a festival celebrating the beauty and glittering history of the four seasons. Arrowtown is home to many charming cafes, restaurants and businesses.
