Learn More about Lisbon

Lisbon a magnificent bay, the Tagus estuary, spanned by an interminable bridge, the Vasco de Gama bridge, sloping streets climbed by tramway, a visit to Lisbon has the air of a European San Francisco if not the opposite, as a result of its seniority. During your stay in the capital of Portugal, the most western of Europe, you will take advantage of your vacations to discover a rich heritage that goes back to Roman times and that has then crossed the centuries and the influences, Muslims in particular, until today.

Lisbon is a city apart, with warm colors and gold, located on the banks of the Tagus, it nestles on 7 hills. The gentle way of life attracts many tourists for a weekend. The city offers to the visitors many curiosities to discover and especially a very pleasant art of living. Its narrow streets plunging towards the Taje which gleams on the horizon resembles a postcard setting. The lively streets of the Alfama, where Fado tunes resound, are an invitation to melancholy. The artistic and bohemian district of Bairro Alto becomes an essential place for your evenings in the Portuguese capital. Lisbon can be discovered on foot or board its historic streetcar no. 28.

Belem, emblematic monument of Lisbon. Discover the Jeronimos Monastery, a jewel of Manueline art. The Triumphal Arch located on the Trade Square has just opened its doors (August 2013). At the top, you can see the city of Lisbon at 360 degrees. Attention, the ascent is deserved. To reach the roof, you have to take very narrow steps. Museum-lovers will be able to see the Calouste-Gulbenkian museum. Children will prefer to "swim" in the company of penguins, rays, sharks, or other tuna in the huge aquarium, called oceanarium. The latter is located on the site of the 1998 World Expo. It is organized around 5 poles, 5 different ecosystems.

You should also try the typical Portuguese dish, the caldera, a kind of local bouillabaisse, cooked with different fish from the coast (monkfish, skate, turbot, conger eel, sometimes clams and squid). All accompanied by potatoes.

Other culinary assets of the city, are seafood, especially clams. They are excellent and cooked in different ways. A real treat. Do not hesitate to ask for this dish as a starter.

Another specialty of Lisbon is the Ginja. This morello cherry-based alcohol is drunk in the ginger, standing in the street. The lisboètes meet there especially in the evening after their day of work. The oldest gingehira is called Espinheira.

To finish your meal in beauty or for your snack, do not forget to taste the Pastéis de Bélem. These famous little flans are only sold at the Pastéis de Bélem, next to the Jeronimos Monastery in Bélem. A delicious treat.
