Learn More about Whitby

Whitby is a town on the north coast of Yorkshire, England, with a beautiful natural setting. Although the population of this small town is just over 13,000 people, every summer it becomes crowded with the arrival of tourist groups.

Discover the hidden Goth culture in your soul by standing at the ruined, gloomy and lonely Whitby Abbey monastery located on the high East Cliff hill, overlooking the town of Whitby, visitors will feel a serene beauty human and unusual. At night, the wind here blows very strongly, so it often makes scary sounds. Perhaps because of that, every October, the people of Whitby hold a "blood-sucking demon" festival in this hill on weekends.

The coastline around Whitby is both unspoiled and tranquil, making it the perfect place to relax. Near the town there is also a bustling beach, which is a family-friendly getaway with a full range of recreational activities. To the west of town is West Cliff Beach with its colorful huts and a two-mile stretch of golden sand towards the lovely fishing village of Sandsend. There is a memorial statue of Captain Cook on West Hill, overlooking the town of Whitby, just to the left of the famous Whale bone arch. The base of the statue is engraved with the names of ships that James Cook has commanded, including the famous Endeavor ship. All of these ships were built at Whitby. Those interested in this famous man and his life should visit the Captain Cook museum on Grape Lane.

The word jet here doesn't mean jet but the Whitby Jet is a jet-black gem made from fossil wood that has made the town famous since Victorian times. At the jewelry shops scattered throughout the old town, visitors can not only choose to buy new pieces of jewelry with this gemstone, but also can buy beautiful items dating back to the late 1800s.
