Learn More about Alaska

The word Alakshak means "continent" in Inuit, because everything is bigger there than elsewhere. Rugged and jagged terrain, mountains covered with eternal snow, the maze of the Inside Passage, glaciers, misty archipelagos, unstable volcanoes, giant lakes, fjords, islands, reefs, icebergs... this is what Alaska is made of. This territory offers landscapes in perpetual movement, which can be admired 24 hours a day in the summer! In winter, it is the opposite, the villages are even cut off from the world because of the snow. A dozen other National Parks and Preserves protect a large part of this gigantic territory always coveted by mining or oil companies. Among the best known are the mountainous and maritime Kenai Fjords National Park, the icebergs of Glacier Bay, or Katmai National Park and Preserve, crossed by the mysterious Valley of 10,000 Smokes, carved in saffron-colored volcanic dust. While discovering Alaska, you will walk in the footsteps of the first visitors who crossed the Bering Strait on foot. You will then discover the world of trappers, sailors, British and Russian whalers, as well as that of railroad workers, prospectors and adventurers, the most famous of whom is Jack London. Northern lights viewing is a popular activity for travelers. We also recommend you to take advantage of the sled dog races, such as the Iditarod Race which takes place in winter, following a route of no less than 1850 km. In summer and autumn, watching bears fishing for salmon is an unforgettable sight. Travelling to the Aleutian Islands is an extraordinary experience. There are sometimes as many sea eagles as there are pigeons in St. Mark's Square! Thousands of whales populate the waters of Alaska in the summer. They make the inland sea passage a splendid cruise.
