We were spending the week in Qualicum, BC and decided one evening to take our kayaks out to enjoy the sunset. Shortly after setting out on the water everything calmed down and the water turned to glass. I never thought the ocean could be so calm. The sunset was amazing as well. Purple hues were cast over the mountains in the distance. Everything reflected off the water like a mirror. It felt like we were in a dream.

At the lake where I spent the most time during my childhood, this particular moment was still one I had never seen before. The combination of sun and fog was spectacular as it danced among the layers of forest that sat above the lake.

On this trip to the Tantalus Range I was forced to come to terms with the tradeoff that exists in the high alpine mountains: beauty and danger. One of our teammates fell 40 metres from the face of a mountain to the snow below. He was evacuated via helicopter. This picture was taken hours later. The horror of the fall and the peaceful beauty of the sunset demonstrated that the mountains are indifferent to our presence.

Every year my wife and I visit family on Vancouver Island. Each morning we wake up and tend to the crab and prawn traps we set out the day before in the bay. We are often greeted by seals and seagulls as we voyage into the water. There is something serene about the water. While we were hauling up our gear I looked and could hardly make out what seemed to be a camouflaged home in the middle of the hills. I’m not sure how they have access to the property… I just know that I’m jealous.

Herons regularly fish along the shores of Vancouver but on this warm August Sunday the tide was out in the afternoon so the beaches will filled with playing dogs and children, making much fewer place for the herons to fish. I found this one a ways from the popular beaches fishing peacefully till I bothered him by snapping some photos.

We got lucky with the weather and the timing as it was November in Vancouver, which often means cloudy skies. This day the sky was clear and when we decided to take a walk on the Iona Spit Trail the timing worked out perfectly as we headed back the sun had just set. The water was calm and there were many cranes on the water.

This is one of my favorite photos because it was completely accidental. I was sending this picture to show some people that I was suppose to be meeting up with exactly where I was. However, I fell in love with the elements this photo contains. From the wicker chairs in the front, to the market tents being visible... I admire everything about it.

As I was descending Black Mountain in Cypress, I witnessed some beautiful light diffraction in the air just after the sunset. This gave me a sky graduated in colors from orange to blue. I used my zoom lens to capture this amazing natural effect.

Bamfield on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada is a remote community that is home to a sophisticated marine science research centre, but also to a town that is spread out between a number of inlets. I loved this photo because we had the amazing experience of kayaking in amongst these inlets and remote areas that are untouched. Shortly after this photo was taken, I saw an elusive humpback whale emerge from the sea briefly and never saw it again.

The beautiful thing about living in Vancouver is the access to local, beautiful places like this. On this day, I was stressed out, tired and a little down on my luck. My remedy? At Pachena Bay Campground in Bamfield, we had a campsite that was only steps to the beach. In a fog zone like on Vancouver Island’s west coast, there are seldom fire bans, but it is also cold at night. The weekend spent camping in Bamfield was among my favourite getaways, and by far my fondest camping experience. The entire weekend we witnessed gray whales feeding on krill from this beach, and evenings were spent sitting by the fire and watching the sunset. Truly peaceful.

While driving to Whistler/Blackcomb on a late Friday evening with the hope of taking pictures for the weekend, the roads were deserted and the sun was setting. The highway, Interstate 90, offered few clear views of the surrounding area. As I came around a curve approaching Anvil Island, a brief opening of a view lended itself to see the bay converging with the mountains with the light fading fast. I stood on a jersey barrier the width of a balance-beam off Interstate 90 balanced with the camera over my head and the viewfinder tilted down to frame the shot. Maybe 50% luck, 50% balance.

This bridge is a staple in my hometown of Vancouver. I like to think this image represents the idea of canceling the unnecessary noise on the outside and focusing on the task at hand. Almost like a perspective of ‘tunnel vision.’

I was in Vancouver, BC visiting a college, and my family and I decided to spend the day in Stanley Park. Near the end of the day, as the sun was starting to go down, we walked onto Lions Gate Bridge, and I saw a sliver of light shining on the lighthouse below us, so I pulled out my camera and took a shot before it disappeared.

I took this photo on my first year in Vancouver when I was crazy in love with the city. Everything seemed so beautiful and full of life, hope and opportunity. It was a city in which I believed everything was possible. I took this photo during the first meetup and first photo walk I ever attended. As the housing crisis grew and years went by, Vancity’s colours started fading away. I never got to see its colours like this again.

Everyone’s seen the iconic Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver, BC. What’s less often seen are the views from the tree canopy walk on the other side of the bridge. Hundreds of years-old Douglas Fir trees tower high above you as you make your way from platform to platform. These trees aren’t Redwoods, but don’t be fooled, they’re massive and awe-inspiring all the same.
